Stony Brook Field
Brewster, MA

Review by Gary

Initially settled in 1659, the town of Brewster sits along Cape Cod Bay in Massachusetts and is home to the Brewster Whitecaps of the Cape Cod Baseball League (CCBL). The Whitecaps play their regular home games between mid-June and mid-August at Stony Brook Field. All these matches start at 5 PM or earlier because Stony Brook is one of three CCBL ballparks that does not have lights for night games.

Accommodating about 4,000 fans, Stony Brook Field is on the grounds of a school with the same name. This sylvan ballpark opened in 2006 is surrounded by trees and is along the Cape Cod Rail Trail, so that fans can bike or walk to the game without need of an automobile. Stony Brook Field has numerous aluminum bleacher seating sections right near the action in addition to fixed picnic table seating.

As with all CCBL ballparks, Stony Brook offers many grassy areas around the infield, outfield and on a high hill closer to the school for fans to take in the play. Behind the three-tiered Lego-style press box and concession stand is a large playground with overhead netting to protect the youths disinterested in baseball from being struck by foul balls.

Brewster began play in the Cape League in 1948, but did not consistently field a team and eventually faded away after the 1960 season. It was not until 1988 that Brewster would join Bourne, Massachusetts as an expansion team in the now-college sanctioned CCBL. Among other philanthropists, Hall of Famer Stan Musial helped raise funds for the Brewster team, who would be called the Whitecaps.

Many a major league player has dirtied his uniform at Stony Brook Field. Former Whitecaps Jeff McNeil (2012), Sean Casey (1994), and Billy Wagner (1992) all played on these modest grounds when they weren’t working summer jobs on the Cape. As of 2024, there are 23 Whitecaps Alumni playing in Major League Baseball.

Compared to many of the other CCBL ballyards, Stony Brook does not contain any remarkable features, except for the players on the field. With an opportunity to see a future great star like Aaron Judge (2012), visitors who spent the morning at a Cape Cod beach in the morning should stop by Stony Brook Field to catch a game in the afternoon.
